Earlier this week, Bukayo Saka signed a new four-year deal with Arsenal, tripling his basic wage to around £210,000-a-week and potentially earning up to £300,000-a-week with performance-based add-ons. However, negotiations were not plain sailing as Saka’s representatives pushed for a release clause to be inserted into the deal, which Arsenal refused due to it weakening their position in the future. As a result, Saka agreed to a shorter length deal than Arsenal were hoping for, with the four-year deal taking him until 2027 instead of the six-year deal they wanted. This means Arsenal will reevaluate Saka’s position in two years’ time, when he’ll either be given fresh terms or considered for sale. Release clauses are more commonplace in mainland Europe, but they’ve started to creep into English football.
