Ian Wright hopes Manchester United back Erik ten Hag in the transfer market and has suggested the Red Devils boss needs to replace three players this summer.

Ten Hag has made a promising start to his tenure at Old Trafford, guiding United to their first trophy since 2017 and close to the Champions League places.

Wright says Ten Hag deserves to receive backing from the Manchester United board and reckons the Dutchman will target a new striker, right-back and goalkeeper this summer.

Wout Weghorst has been ever-present in the United side since his January loan move but has received criticism for his performances and is viewed as a short-term solution rather than a long-term signing.

Wright says he ‘can’t wait’ for Ten Hag to start working with the striker he ‘wants’ and believes Manchester United will also benefit from signing a new right-back, with Diogo Dalot and Aaron Wan-Bissaka competing for the position this season.

The Arsenal legend also doubts David de Gea is the right goalkeeper for Ten Hag’s style of play, after Jacob Murphy revealed Newcastle targeted the Spanish shot-stopper in Sunday’s 2-0 win at St James’ Park.

‘That man [Erik ten Hag] has got to get everything he needs to try and do his job well and play the football he wants to play,’ the former England striker said on the Wrighty’s House podcast.

‘For what he’s done at Manchester United this season, he deserves that.

‘I still don’t think the right-hand side of the team is working right now. You’ve got [Jadon] Sancho and Antony who are capable of doing unbelievable stuff.

‘Antony used to have so many options [at Ajax] – he could cut in and target the No. 9 or there would be a player overlapping him. He had so many different options to get the best out of him.

‘The same for Sancho at Borussia Dortmund. You have two unbelievable players who can do loads of great stuff but they’ve not been put into a system where they can thrive.

‘I can’t wait for Erik ten Hag to get the right-back he wants and the No. 9 he wants.

‘The goalkeeper situation – you listen to the Jacob Murphy interview and you don’t often hear stuff like that, it was brilliant to hear.

‘At some stage something needs to be done about the goalkeeper [De Gea]. I want to see all of those things before I judge Erik ten Hag too much.’

Manchester United slipped outside the top-four places after the weekend’s results but can move back above Tottenham and Newcastle when they face Brentford on Wednesday night.
