Aaron Ramsdale Dubbed ‘Bananas’ By Former Teammate Matt Turner
Nottingham Forest’s Matt Turner was asked who is the weirdest goalkeeper he has come across and ‘bananas’ Aaron Ramsdale was firmly in the conversation. Turner was teammates with Ramsdale at Arsenal before moving to Forest over the summer, leaving the England international to compete for the gloves with new signing David Raya.
The American claims that he might be the most ‘normal’ goalkeeper around, but asked who is on the opposite end of that scale, he landed on former Gunners teammate Ramsdale and a man from his Major League Soccer days, Bobby Shuttleworth.
‘I think probably I’m the most normal goalkeeper out there. I actually believe that,’ Turner told CBS Sports.
‘The weirdest? Either Bobby Shuttleworth, he was the first goalie I ever saw and was like, oh my god that guy’s crazy, or Aaron Ramsdale, he’s also bananas, that guy. He’s fucking weird, but I love him.
‘He’s just eccentric. He’s got little bits of flair in his game. He’s very opposite from me in that sense, on and off the field. Maybe because I’m so normal, that makes me weird.’

Bobby Shuttleworth is an American goalkeeper who has played in Major League Soccer for a number of teams. He began his career with the New England Revolution in 2009 and went on to play for Minnesota United, Chicago Fire and Seattle Sounders before retiring in 2019.
During his time in MLS, Shuttleworth was known for his eccentric style of goalkeeping and was often referred to as ‘The Madman’ by his teammates and opponents.
Aaron Ramsdale’s Career So Far
Ramsdale was first choice goalkeeper while Turner was at Arsenal, but now he is competing with Raya and has been losing out to the Spaniard in recent weeks. The Englishman returned to the team for the League Cup win over Brentford last week and earned praise from Gunners boss Mikel Arteta for how he was dealing with the situation.
‘For sure, he’s been exceptional around the place – and especially with the situation,’ said Arteta.
‘We love him, for sure. We know his character and what he brings to the team and we are happy to have him. Every player is very important. Today he had the opportunity to play and he had a really good game.’
Raya started in the 2-1 Champions League defeat at Lens on Tuesday night, making an error which led to the French side’s first goal.
‘This happens,’ said Arteta of the poor clearance from the goalkeeper. ‘Mistakes are part of football. They will continue to be there somehow.’
