Arsenal and Chelsea Legend Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang Clinches Record as Europa League’s Leading Goalscorer
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has made history by becoming the all-time top goalscorer in the Europa League. The former Arsenal captain and Chelsea flop scored the opening goal for Olympique Marseille in their 2-2 draw against Shakhtar Donetsk on Thursday evening. This achievement sees Aubameyang equal the record set by Radamel Falcao.
While the draw was not an ideal result for Marseille, who will face Shakhtar Donetsk again in the second leg of their play-off tie, it provided a moment of celebration for Aubameyang. The 34-year-old has now scored a total of 30 goals in the Europa League, matching Falcao’s impressive record. Aubameyang achieved this feat across 54 appearances, representing Borussia Dortmund (8), Arsenal (14), Barcelona (2), and Marseille (6).
It is important to note that this record does not include goals scored before the Europa League was rebranded from the UEFA Cup. If these goals were taken into account, Henrik Larsson would still hold the top spot with his 31 goals, just one ahead of Aubameyang, Falcao, and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.
Aubameyang’s successful season at Marseille marks a comeback in form after a turbulent few seasons. He has scored 15 goals in 31 games so far in his maiden season for the Ligue 1 side. This resurgence comes after a falling out with Mikel Arteta led to him being stripped of the Arsenal captaincy in 2021 and subsequently joining Barcelona. However, his time at Chelsea was less successful, as he only managed to score three goals in 21 games for the Blues.
Aubameyang’s achievement in becoming the Europa League’s all-time leading goalscorer is a testament to his skill and consistency throughout his career. His ability to find the back of the net has been demonstrated across multiple clubs and competitions, solidifying his status as a true legend of the game.
