Arrests made before England’s Euro 2024 game against Serbia
As England prepared for their opening Euro 2024 match against Serbia, a number of arrests were made before the game even began. The UK Football Policing Unit reported that German police were responding to “an issue” in Gelsenkirchen, where the match was taking place. However, the UKFPU stated that they did not believe any UK nationals were involved in the arrests and that the violence was instigated by foreign nationals.
“Our officers are at the location speaking to German colleagues,” the UKFPU stated. “Our investigation team is now reviewing footage of the incident, and if any UK nationals have been involved, football banning orders will be sought.”
Videos circulating on social media showed tables, chairs, and bottles being thrown in the city before riot police arrived on the scene. Local police confirmed that there was a “physical altercation” but could not confirm if it was directly related to football or which nationalities were involved.
Gelsenkirchen police assured the public that they had the situation under control, stating, “The police are on site with sufficient personnel and have the situation under control.”
In a separate incident, Hamburg police encountered a dangerous situation when they shot and seriously injured a man on Sunday. According to a Hamburg police spokesperson, the suspect was armed with a pickaxe and had attempted to ignite a petrol bomb. In response, officers used pepper spray and ultimately shot the man.
As tensions rise around football events, it is crucial for law enforcement to maintain control and protect both players and fans. The incidents in Gelsenkirchen and Hamburg highlight the need for increased security measures and cooperation between international policing units during major tournaments like the UEFA Euro.
While it is a relief that no UK nationals were believed to be involved in the arrests in Gelsenkirchen, it is important for authorities to thoroughly investigate the incidents and take appropriate actions against any individuals found to have participated in violence or disorder. Football banning orders, which restrict individuals from attending matches, can serve as a deterrent and help maintain a safe and enjoyable environment for all attendees.
Overall, these incidents serve as a stark reminder of the potential for violence and disruption during high-profile football events. It is crucial for authorities to remain vigilant and take proactive measures to prevent and respond to any disturbances, ensuring the safety and enjoyment of fans and players alike.
