Three Man United Supporters Arrested for Tragedy Chanting Outside Anfield
Merseyside Police have confirmed the arrest of three Man United supporters for tragedy chanting outside Anfield ahead of last month’s 0-0 draw with Liverpool. The Premier League clash took place on December 17 and ended in a frustrating draw for the title challengers.
Incident Outside Anfield
Prior to the kickoff, a group of supporters engaged in tragedy chanting outside the stadium. The Athletic reported that two males from Somerset and one from Gloucestershire were detained for chants related to the Hillsborough disaster. Additionally, a 20-year-old male from Solihull was later arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage on the concourse inside Anfield. The individuals accused of tragedy chanting were released under investigation and will await any decision over charges at a later date.
Ongoing Warnings Against Tragedy Chanting
Clubs across the Premier League have been issuing warnings against tragedy chanting, with new messaging released this season following a series of incidents. In November, Luton faced backlash after a large section of their support sang offensive chants during Liverpool’s 1-1 draw. The club issued an apology, but it was seen by many as inadequate given the circumstances.
Last summer, a Man United supporter named James White was arrested and charged for wearing a shirt mocking the Hillsborough disaster during the FA Cup final between Man United and Man City. White received a four-year ban from attending regulated football games, as well as a £1,000 fine and £485 in court costs.
It is crucial for football clubs and authorities to continue taking strong action against tragedy chanting to ensure a respectful and inclusive environment for all fans.
