Anton Johansson Impresses at World Junior Summer Showcase
Anton Johansson, a defense prospect for the Detroit Red Wings, has been turning heads at the World Junior Summer Showcase in Plymouth, Michigan. Despite facing tough competition for a spot on Sweden’s world junior roster, Johansson has stood out as one of the team’s most noticeable players on the back end.
Johansson, a 2022 fourth-round pick, is competing against fellow Red Wings prospect Axel Sandin Pellikka, who was a returner from last year’s team, as well as other highly touted defense prospects. The competition is fierce, but Johansson has made a strong case for himself with his performances in the exhibition games.
In Sweden’s first game against the split-squad USA Blue, Johansson scored the team’s first goal of the tournament in a dominant 7-0 win. He followed that up with the team’s only goal in a lopsided 10-1 loss to USA White. Johansson also contributed an assist on Sandin Pellikka’s game-winning goal against Finland.
Although his tournament is likely over, Johansson has given the Swedish national delegation something to consider leading up to the World Junior Championship in December. He expressed confidence in his performance, stating that he played his best hockey during the showcase.
Johansson’s greatest strengths currently lie in the offensive zone. Standing at 6-foot-4, he possesses excellent instincts and skating ability for his size. He ran Sweden’s top power play in their opening game and showcased his speed with a powerful drive to the net. Despite excelling offensively, Johansson also held his own defensively, making key plays to stop opposing rushes.
Sweden’s coach, Magnus Hävelid, praised Johansson’s performance but remained reserved, noting that playing in the SHL (Swedish Hockey League) would benefit him. Hävelid acknowledged Johansson’s potential both offensively and defensively and believes that playing against tough competition in the SHL will aid in his development.
While Johansson’s offensive skills come naturally, he will need to continue proving himself defensively. His size allows him to win battles in the corners and make effective zone exits. Johansson expressed confidence in his defensive abilities during the showcase, but consistency will be key as he progresses in his career.
At 194 pounds, Johansson is still relatively wiry, but his potential is evident. Adding strength and physicality to his game will only enhance his two-way abilities as a defenseman. The Red Wings, who lack depth on the right side in their farm system, drafted Johansson with the belief that he can fill that void in the future.
Despite not receiving the same spotlight as higher draft picks, Johansson’s inclusion in the SHL last season at just 18 years old is noteworthy. He will soon return to Leksand, where he will compete for a larger role with the senior team.
Johansson’s impressive performance at the World Junior Summer Showcase indicates that he is ready to take the next step in his career. He has shown that he belongs in the conversation for a spot on Sweden’s world junior roster and has the potential to make a significant impact in the SHL.
As Johansson continues to develop and gain experience, both offensively and defensively, he could become a valuable asset for the Red Wings organization. With his size, skill set, and determination, Johansson has the tools to make a name for himself in the world of hockey.
