Newcastle United Manager Eddie Howe Provides Update on Anthony Gordon’s Injury
Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has provided an update on the injury sustained by Anthony Gordon during the Carabao Cup quarter-final defeat to Chelsea. Gordon was brutally tackled by Moises Caicedo early in the match, but managed to continue playing. However, he was substituted in the second half due to the injury.
Gordon’s Injury and Caicedo’s Challenge
Eddie Howe described Gordon’s knock as “really nasty looking” and expressed his concern for the player. Although he did not personally witness the challenge, others have informed him that it should have been a red card for Caicedo. The Newcastle boss acknowledged that Gordon did sustain an injury from the tackle.
Other Injury Updates
In addition to Gordon’s injury, Howe confirmed that Sven Botman did not suffer any further injuries but was only intended to play for 45 minutes. However, Emil Krafth did pick up a knock during the match.
Caicedo’s Challenge Criticized
Former Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given expressed his belief that Caicedo was fortunate to avoid a red card for his tackle on Gordon. Given suggested that if VAR had been in use, the severity of the challenge would have been evident and a red card would likely have been given.
