Atlanta Braves Acquire Max Stassi and David Fletcher in Trade with Los Angeles Angels
The Atlanta Braves have made a significant trade with the Los Angeles Angels, acquiring catcher Max Stassi and infielder David Fletcher. In exchange, the Angels will receive minor-league first baseman Evan White and pitcher Tyler Thomas. The trade was announced by both teams on Friday evening.
Financial Implications
This trade will provide the Angels with approximately $6 million in payroll savings for the 2024 season. No cash was exchanged as part of the deal.
Max Stassi’s Background
Max Stassi, 32, did not play in the previous season due to personal reasons related to the premature birth of his son, Jackson, who faced health complications. Stassi still has one year remaining on his three-year, $17.5 million contract extension signed in 2022.
David Fletcher’s Performance
David Fletcher is owed $15.5 million over the next two seasons. He spent a significant portion of the 2023 season in Triple A after struggling offensively in the previous two seasons. Additionally, Fletcher is close to reaching five years of service time, which would have limited the team’s ability to demote him to the minor leagues.
Evan White’s Situation
Evan White, who signed a six-year, $24 million deal with the Seattle Mariners in 2019, will not be added to the Angels’ 40-man roster. He is owed $15 million over the next two years, with club options for three additional seasons. White has not played in the majors since 2021 and has faced various health issues in recent years. He was involved in the trade that sent Jarred Kelenic to Atlanta earlier in the offseason.
Impact on Angels’ Catcher Depth
This trade limits the Angels’ depth and experience at the catcher position. General Manager Perry Minasian previously expressed the team’s appreciation for Stassi’s pitch-calling abilities, which were missed during the pitching staff’s struggles last season. However, this trade opens up an opportunity for catcher Matt Thaiss to secure a roster spot, as the team did not want to release him.
Tyler Thomas’ Acquisition
Tyler Thomas, 27, was acquired from the New York Mets’ system in the minor-league portion of the Rule 5 Draft earlier this week.
