Brighton Captain Lewis Dunk Avoids Red Card in Tottenham Loss: Ange Postecoglou Criticizes VAR Again
In a 4-2 defeat to Brighton, Tottenham Hotspur faced controversy as Brighton captain Lewis Dunk escaped a red card for two reckless fouls on Dejan Kulusevski. The match saw Brighton dominate with stunning goals from Jack Hinshelwood and Pervis Estupinan, as well as two penalties converted by Joao Pedro. Late goals from Alejo Veliz and Ben Davies gave Tottenham hope, but it was not enough for a comeback.
The controversy arose in the build-up to Veliz’s goal when Dunk made a reckless challenge on Kulusevski. This was not the first time Dunk had made a studs-up challenge on the Swede during the game. Despite being booked for the second foul, Dunk will miss Brighton’s next game against West Ham.
Ange Postecoglou, the manager of Tottenham, expressed his frustration with VAR for not getting involved in the incident. He sarcastically praised VAR for their quick decision-making in awarding the first penalty but criticized their failure to address Dunk’s tackle. Postecoglou also reassured that Kulusevski was “okay” after the fouls.
The defeat leaves Tottenham in fifth place in the table, six points behind leaders Liverpool. They will be looking to bounce back when they face Bournemouth on New Year’s Eve. Reflecting on the game, Postecoglou acknowledged that his team lacked sharpness and looked tired. He credited Brighton for taking advantage of their performance but commended his players for giving their all.
