Anfield Road Stand Expansion: A Look Back
The Anfield Road Stand has been a part of Liverpool Football Club since 1892 and has seen many changes over the years. From Bob Paisley’s colorful seating choice to the two-tier stand in the late 90s, the Anfield Road Stand has been an integral part of the club’s history. In 2023/24, the stand will be expanded to include 7,000 new seats, bringing the total capacity to over 61,000. Let’s take a look back at the evolution of the Anfield Road Stand.
Bob Paisley’s Colorful Seating Choice
Bob Paisley, the legendary manager of Liverpool Football Club, was the first to make a significant change to the Anfield Road Stand. He noticed that the red shirts of the players were getting lost among the red seats and decided to add different colored seats to help distinguish the players. This colorful seating choice is still seen today and is a reminder of Paisley’s legacy at Liverpool.
The Two-Tier Stand
In the late 90s, the Anfield Road Stand was remodeled to create a two-tier stand. This change increased the capacity of the stand to 9,074 and also provided letterbox views in the lower tier. The two-tier stand is still in place today and will remain so when the expansion is complete in 2023/24.
The Expansion
The latest change to Anfield is the expansion of the Anfield Road Stand. This expansion will add 7,000 new seats to the stand, bringing the total capacity to over 61,000. The expansion will also include improved amenities for away supporters, as well as a new entrance for the stand. The area around the stand will also be almost unrecognisable when the expansion is complete, as it was previously a car park that separated Anfield from Stanley Park.
A Spiritual Home
Anfield has undergone significant changes over the last 131 years but has remained Liverpool’s spiritual home since its formation in 1892. Bill Shankly famously said “the very word ‘Anfield’ means more to me than I can describe” and this sentiment still rings true today. The expansion of the Anfield Road Stand is just another chapter in its incredible history and will help ensure that Anfield remains a spiritual home for generations to come.
