It’s not everyday Liverpool players repeat phrases said by Manchester United legends.

But unfortunately for Trent Alexander-Arnold, that’s all he’s been hearing this week.

The Reds are travelling to Paris this Saturday for their Champions League final tie against Real Madrid, and Alexander-Arnold will be expected to help form his side’s backline.

It’s likely fellow full-back Andy Robertson will be joining him in the line up, too.

Both players have played 46 games each this season and each have been pivotal in helping Jurgen Klopp’s side have the joint-best record of least goals conceded this season (alongside Manchester City), as well as contributing to Liverpool’s attack.

However, Manchester United cult hero and former right-back Gary Neville recently claimed Robertson is the better of the pair, saying he was the Premier League’s best full-back “by a mile”.

And Robertson isn’t letting Trent forget about Neville’s comment as they lead up to the big show down for the treble this weekend.

“I’ve used it with Trent for the last week,” Robertson said. “I just say to him ‘by a mile’ and keep saying it to him.

“I walk past and that’s all I need to say. He knows exactly what I’m talking about because I know he watched it. That’s the relationship me and him have.”

And Robertson confirmed he definitely doesn’t mind that it was a United former captain that gave him the compliment.

He explained: “It is somebody who played for Manchester United who said it but, for me, he was one of the best full backs in the Premier league and to have someone like that saying that kind of took me back a bit. Obviously that kind of praise is always nice.

“I don’t necessarily need it but when you do hear it from somebody so well thought of in the game, it was very good words and I enjoyed hearing it from him.”

But whilst Robertson is more than fine with Neville’s comments, Alexander-Arnold doesn’t quite feel the same given he’s contributed more assists (12) than Robertson this season (10).

“Trent’s not too happy.” Robertson joked.

“He gets enough praise. You could fill this room with people who would say he is the best full-back by a mile. He is not short on that.

“We wind each other up on a lot of things and he usually has the upper hand. I’ll take this one.”

So if Alexander-Arnold looks to have taken it up a gear on Saturday (if that’s even possible), we’ll all know why.
