Andre Onana’s penalty save gives Manchester United first Champions League win of the season
In a tough and frustrating game at Old Trafford on Tuesday night, Manchester United edged past Copenhagen with a much needed 1-0 win.
Harry Maguire scored with 20 minutes to go and it seemed that all three points were in the bag, only for Scott McTominay to give away a penalty in the 94th minute.
Jordan Larsson – the son of former Red Devils forward Henrik – stepped up to the spot but the under fire Andre Onana produced a massive save to deny him and win the game for United.
Onana’s Redemption
The goalkeeper has been under a huge amount of scrutiny since arriving from Inter Milan in a deal worth upwards of £44million, having made numerous mistakes and conceding 20 goals in 12 games before tonight.
But he did a lot to help his cause, not only with the penalty but with another superb save early in the second-half.
‘I’m just doing my job, the most important thing is to win against a tough team,’ the 27-year-old told TNT Sports.
‘I am happy for the victory, we did a good game and a big goal from Harry. We are Manchester United. We are a big club, big players. It’s just a matter of time, now we have to continue like this. I have no doubt we will make it.’
Ten Hag Praises Onana
Ten Hag, who was determined to sign Onana after working with him at Ajax, was full of praise for his keeper, adding: ‘Of course it is incredible and a great night.
‘Especially in the dying second when you concede a penalty, but a brilliant save from Andre Onana. Those players, Harry Maguire played a good game and Andre Onana as well. He had an important save just after half-time.’
