Andre Onana and Harry Maguire dismiss any issues between them after Manchester United’s defeat to Borussia Dortmund
Manchester United’s pre-season tour of the United States has been a difficult one, with the Red Devils suffering three defeats in a row. One of the most notable moments of Sunday’s 3-2 loss to Borussia Dortmund was when new signing Andre Onana launched a furious rant at former captain Harry Maguire for a sloppy pass.
The Cameroon international has now dismissed any issues between him and Maguire, saying that the players have to demand a lot of themselves if they want to be successful. Onana added that he has a good relationship with the defender, and that he was simply being critical of himself and his teammates.
Onana’s Rant at Maguire
The incident occurred when Maguire played a short pass to Christian Eriksen, which led to a Dortmund chance and Onana making a save. The 27-year-old then ran out of his goal to shout at Maguire for his decision.
Onana told Manchester United club media: ‘I try to talk to them a lot because I know he’s a good player, he is one of the captains of the team. That’s big and he is good with the ball, so I would demand [from] him a lot and he’s a good, great guy. I have a good relationship with him. I have to be and he has to be ready and I spoke with him because when I’m in the goal, I demand to everyone a lot.’
Onana’s Expectations
Onana added on MUTV: ‘I demand [from] them a lot and I will demand from them a lot because they are great players. Now, for me, it’s a big honour to play with these defenders. With [Lisandro] Martinez, Harry [Maguire] they are doing great things. They are important players for the club. I’m very happy to be part of this team and playing with them is something great.’
The goalkeeper also said that he expects the same from every Manchester United player, and that mistakes will come but they should not be afraid of them as they are part of life and they can learn from them.
Maguire’s Response
Maguire has not responded publicly to Onana’s comments, but it is clear that the two players have moved on from the incident and are now focused on helping Manchester United improve their performances in pre-season.
Conclusion
It is clear that Onana and Maguire have dismissed any issues between them after the goalkeeper’s rant during Manchester United’s friendly defeat to Borussia Dortmund. Onana has said that he expects the same from every player at the club, and that mistakes will come but they should not be afraid of them as they are part of life and they can learn from them.
