Andre Onana Called Up to Cameroon Squad for Africa Cup of Nations
Cameroon goalkeeper Andre Onana has been selected to represent his country in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations. The tournament is set to begin on January 13 and will conclude with the final on February 11.
Onana’s call-up means that he will likely miss at least one match against Tottenham, and potentially up to six matches depending on Cameroon’s progress in the tournament.
During Onana’s absence, Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag will rely on summer signing Altay Bayindir as the team’s goalkeeper. Bayindir, who joined the club from Fenerbahce for £4.3 million, has yet to make an appearance for Man Utd.
Another option for Ten Hag is veteran goalkeeper Tom Heaton, who joined the club in 2021 but has also not featured in any matches.
Onana’s Performance and Fan Reactions
Onana has had a challenging start to his career at Old Trafford, with several mistakes leading to goals. This has resulted in mixed views among fans regarding his unavailability for the upcoming matches.
Some fans see it as an advantage for Manchester United, while others believe that the season starts now without Onana. There is also excitement and anticipation for Altay Bayindir to step up in Onana’s absence.
Onana’s International Career
Until recently, Ten Hag was uncertain whether Onana would be called up for the Africa Cup of Nations. The 27-year-old goalkeeper had retired from international duty following the 2022 World Cup due to a dispute with manager Rigobert Song. However, his decision was reversed in August of this year, and he was once again included in the national team.
Cameroon’s first game in the tournament is against Guinea on January 15. They will then face Senegal four days later and Gambia on January 23 during the group stage.
