Manchester United Set to Lose Andre Onana for Cameroon’s AFCON Campaign

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has decided to play for Cameroon at the Africa Cup of Nations which starts in January, according to reports. Onana was expected to miss the tournament after he was kicked out of Cameroon’s World Cup squad last November following a bust-up with head coach Rigobert Song.

But Onana made his return and kept a clean sheet in Cameroon’s 3-0 win against Burundi in September, while earlier this month he played in his nation’s 1-0 defeat to Senegal in a friendly.

United have been unsure whether they would lose their £47.2 million goalkeeper at the start of 2024, but according to the i, Onana has now opted to represent his national side at AFCON.

Onana Plans to Play in Every Game He is Called Up For

‘At the moment he plans to play in every game he is called up for,’ a source close to Onana told the newspaper.

The tournament, which will be held in the Ivory Coast, starts on January 13 while the final will be played on February 11.

Onana’s decision means he could miss several games for United in the Premier League, the FA Cup, and potentially the Carabao Cup and the Champions League if Cameroon reach the final.

Games Onana Could Miss for Manchester United

United are set to face Tottenham, Wolves, West Ham and Aston Villa in the Premier League during Onana’s absence.

United will now be forced to rely on Turkish goalkeeper Altay Bayindir, who is yet to make an appearance since his arrival from Fenerbahce in the summer, or third-choice Tom Heaton.
