Marcos Alonso Set to Leave Barcelona After Disappointing Stint
Barcelona Defender Could Return to Premier League
After a frustrating year with Barcelona, Marcos Alonso is reportedly set to leave the club. The 32-year-old defender, who joined Barcelona in September 2022 after leaving Chelsea, has struggled to make an impression under Barca boss Xavi Hernandez.
Alonso’s contract with Barcelona is set to expire in June, and the club is not expected to offer him a renewal. The Spanish defender is now considering other options and has received numerous offers from other clubs, according to Spanish outlet Sport.
Reports suggest that clubs in Saudi Arabia are interested in signing Alonso and may make a move for him as early as January. Meanwhile, Manchester United had previously shown interest in the defender before the summer transfer deadline.
Alonso’s Potential Return to Premier League
Although Manchester United had considered signing Alonso as cover for Luke Shaw, who was sidelined with a muscle injury, the situation has changed. Shaw has now resumed training, and United has secured the loan signing of Sergio Reguilon from Tottenham Hotspur.
However, other English clubs are also interested in Alonso, which could sway him away from a move to Saudi Arabia and see him return to the Premier League.
Barcelona is reportedly willing to facilitate Alonso’s return to England, but the player is not considering leaving until the end of the season.
Struggles at Barcelona
Despite helping Xavi’s Barcelona side win the La Liga title last season, Alonso’s place in the team was not guaranteed for the new season due to Financial Fair Play restrictions. He has struggled for game time this campaign, making only four league appearances.
Alonso has fallen down the pecking order under Xavi, with first-choice left-back Alejandro Balde and loanee Joao Cancelo ahead of him. Returning to the Premier League could provide Alonso with an opportunity to regain his form and success in English top-flight football.
