Allen escapes prison in NBA benefits scam

Date:

Former Boston Celtics and Memphis Grizzlies guard Tony Allen has been sentenced to community service and supervision for his involvement in a scheme to defraud the NBA’s health and welfare benefits plan. Allen is among the 18 former NBA players accused of submitting $5 million in fraudulent medical and dental claims from 2017 to 2020.

According to court documents, Allen pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit health care fraud and wire fraud in April. He has already paid back most of the $420,000 he illegally obtained before being charged. This case is part of a larger investigation into fraudulent insurance claims worth $2.5 million involving several former NBA players.

Last week, Terrence Williams, a first-round draft pick in 2009, was sentenced to 10 years in prison and ordered to forfeit more than $650,000 and pay $2.5 million in restitution for leading the scam. Williams pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit health care and wire fraud, as well as aggravated identity theft.

In addition to Allen and Williams, charges were filed against Allen’s wife, Desiree, Glen Davis (another former Celtic), Shannon Brown (a two-time champion with the Lakers), Melvin Ely (a former Spur), Sebastian Telfair (a highly celebrated high school player), and 12 other former players. Keyon Dooling and Alan Anderson were previously sentenced to prison terms in connection with the case.

The scheme involved Williams recruiting other benefits plan participants by offering them false invoices to support their fraudulent claims. Medical professionals, including a dentist in California and doctors in California and Washington, provided Williams with the invoices. In exchange for kickbacks totaling at least $300,000, Williams submitted the fraudulent claims.

Williams also impersonated others as part of the scheme, including posing as the benefits plan’s administrative manager through a fake email address. He was charged and arrested in April 2022 and, while on pretrial release, texted threats to a witness.

Tony Allen, 41, was a six-time All-Defensive team player and a member of the 2008 NBA champion Celtics. He played for the Grizzlies from 2010 to 2017. Terrence Williams, 36, played for the New Jersey Nets, Celtics, Houston Rockets, and Sacramento Kings before retiring in 2013.

This case highlights the importance of maintaining the integrity of health and welfare benefits plans in professional sports. The NBA and other leagues have strict guidelines and regulations in place to prevent fraud and abuse. However, cases like this demonstrate that there are individuals who are willing to exploit these systems for personal gain.

The sentencing of Tony Allen and Terrence Williams sends a strong message that fraudulent activities will not be tolerated. It also serves as a reminder to current and former players to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to their benefits plans.

The NBA and its players’ association should continue to work together to enhance the security measures surrounding health and welfare benefits. This may include implementing stricter verification processes for claims, conducting regular audits, and providing education and training to players about the potential risks and consequences of fraudulent activities.

In conclusion, the sentencing of Tony Allen and Terrence Williams for their involvement in a scheme to defraud the NBA’s health and welfare benefits plan highlights the need for continued vigilance in preventing fraud in professional sports. The NBA and its players’ association must work together to strengthen security measures and ensure the integrity of these important programs.
