Alex Greenwood has been forced to withdraw from the England squad for their upcoming friendly against Australia on Tuesday. The 29-year-old defender had played the full game in Thursday’s Finalissima, scoring a penalty as the Lionesses beat Brazil 4-2 in a shootout at Wembley. During the 73rd minute of the match, Greenwood received medical attention after hitting her head on the ground. She has since returned to her club for treatment and manager Sarina Wiegman has not called up a replacement.
Last month, Millie Bright withdrew from the squad and was replaced by Arsenal defender Lotte Wubben-Moy. The Lionesses will face Australia at Brentford’s Gtech Community Stadium on Tuesday, in what is their last scheduled fixture before this summer’s World Cup.
The team will be hoping to put on a good performance in their final test before the tournament, despite Greenwood’s absence. The Manchester City centre-back has been an integral part of the team and her absence will be felt. However, Wiegman will be confident that her squad can still put in a strong showing against the Socceroos.
