Sir Alex Ferguson Furious with Manchester United Director John Murtough over Failed Jude Bellingham Pursuit
Sir Alex Ferguson expressed his anger towards Manchester United football director John Murtough following the club’s unsuccessful attempt to sign Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham.
The Failed Pursuit of Jude Bellingham
The incident occurred in 2020 when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, then manager of Manchester United, wanted to bring 16-year-old Bellingham from Birmingham City to the club. Solskjaer arranged a presentation for Bellingham and his parents to convince them to join United.
Sir Alex Ferguson’s Involvement
Solskjaer invited Sir Alex Ferguson to be part of the charm offensive to persuade Bellingham. Ferguson gladly accepted the invitation and attended the meeting at United’s Carrington training ground.
Murtough’s Interruption
During the meeting, Murtough, unintentionally according to him, led Bellingham away for a tour of the training ground. This abrupt interruption infuriated Ferguson, leading to a heated argument between him and Murtough at a later date.
The Consequences
Manchester United paid the price for Murtough’s decision as Bellingham rejected their offer and instead moved to Dortmund for £25m. Since then, Bellingham has become one of the best players in the world and completed a £100m transfer to Real Madrid.
In addition to the failed pursuit of Bellingham, Manchester United also missed out on signing Erling Haaland in January 2020. Haaland chose Dortmund over United in a £20m deal. He has since scored an impressive 71 goals in 76 matches for Manchester City.
