Alejandro Garnacho has revealed that Erik ten Hag personally rejected his request to end his Manchester United season early in order to play for Argentina at the Under-20 World Cup. The 18-year-old winger was initially included in Javier Mascherano’s squad for the tournament, which began in May, but Argentina required permission from United. Despite being recovering from an ankle injury, Garnacho was keen to represent his country but Ten Hag denied him the chance to feature at the tournament. As a result, Garnacho ended up featuring in United’s final four games of the Premier League season, as well as the defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup final.
Garnacho has now been called up to Argentina’s senior squad for their upcoming friendlies against Australia and Indonesia this month. He has revealed that he spoke with Lionel Scaloni, who told him that he will be given the opportunity to play. He also said that Scaloni asked him to be himself and that he is excited to start in the Manchester United first team and now in the senior team with Argentina.
