Aldershot Town Troll Chelsea After 3-1 Pre-Season Friendly Victory
Aldershot Town stunned their Premier League opponents with a 3-1 victory in a pre-season friendly on Tuesday, and they didn’t miss the opportunity to troll Chelsea on social media afterwards. The Shots, who play in the fifth-tier National League, posted a tweet that has since gone viral with over 12 million views, 126,000 likes and 22,600 retweets.
Aldershot’s Comfortable Victory
The Recreation Ground in Hampshire was packed with 1,505 fans as Jack Barham, Lorent Tolaj and Kwame Thomas all got on the scoresheet for Aldershot. The Chelsea XI was packed with youngsters and did not feature any first-team players, but that didn’t stop Aldershot from trolling Mauricio Pochettino’s side on social media.
“A comfortable victory against mid-table Premier League opposition,” Aldershot posted on their Twitter account along with a handshake emoji.
Chelsea’s Turbulent Season
Chelsea suffered a horrific season last term, finishing 12th in the Premier League and without a trophy after going through three different managers. Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter were both sacked while Frank Lampard also struggled in his second stint as head coach after coming in on a short-term deal which expired in the summer.
Many rival fans poked fun at Chelsea throughout the season, suggesting that they were in a relegation battle towards the end of the 2022-23 campaign. It was Chelsea’s worst finish for nearly 30 years in the top flight, coming just two seasons after they won the Champions League under ex-boss Tuchel.
Pochettino’s Mission to Turn Things Around
The west Londoners have endured a turbulent spell since the club’s change of ownership last year as Todd Boehly took over from Roman Abramovich. Former Tottenham manager Pochettino, appointed at Stamford Bridge this summer, will be hoping to turn Chelsea’s fortunes around when the 2023-24 season gets started on August 13 as they host Liverpool in the Premier League.
It remains to be seen whether Pochettino can turn things around for Chelsea and restore them to their former glory. But for now, Aldershot Town can bask in the glory of their 3-1 victory over their Premier League opponents and enjoy their well-deserved trolling of Chelsea.
