Alan Pardew questions whether Marcus Rashford deserved new Manchester United deal
Former Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew has questioned whether Marcus Rashford ‘deserved’ the new deal he was given at Manchester United.
The England striker put pen to paper on a new five-year deal in the summer to end speculation over his future at the club.
Rashford hit 30 goals in all competitions last season, and carried United to third place in the Premier League.
Rashford’s Struggles This Season
However, he’s managed just one goal so far this season and there are calls for the winger to be dropped. Rashford was taken off in Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace, despite United being in dire need of a goal.
And Pardew has questioned whether Rashford earned the deal that saw him made United’s top earner.
“Rashford, there’s a lot of moaning about him at the moment, they gave him a bumper new contract and he’s now probably in the top 10 best players in the country – did he really deserve that contract?” Pardew said on TalkSPORT.
Pardew went on to point out that while United have some of the best players in the country, they lack a system or core set of players that they can rely on week in and week out.
Rashford’s Impact Last Season
Rashford’s impact last season cannot be understated. He scored 30 goals in all competitions and was instrumental in helping United secure third place in the Premier League. His form earned him a call up to the England squad for the 2018 World Cup, where he scored a crucial goal against Colombia.
The 21-year-old is one of the most exciting young players in the Premier League, and his new deal at United will ensure he remains at Old Trafford for the foreseeable future.
Conclusion
Rashford has struggled to replicate his form from last season, but there is no doubt that he is one of the most talented players in the league. Whether he deserved his new deal or not is up for debate, but what is certain is that Manchester United have secured one of their most important players for the long-term.
