Jordan Henderson Completes Free Transfer to Ajax
Al-Ettifaq’s Club President Takes a Dig at Jordan Henderson After Transfer to Ajax
In a surprising turn of events, Jordan Henderson has completed his free transfer from the Saudi Pro League side, Al-Ettifaq, to Ajax. The club president of Al-Ettifaq appeared to aim a subtle dig at Henderson following the confirmation of his transfer.
Henderson officially joined Ajax on Thursday night, signing a two-and-a-half year contract with the Dutch giants. This move comes just six months after the former Liverpool captain controversially moved to Saudi Arabia to reunite with his former teammate turned manager, Steven Gerrard.
To secure his return to Europe, Henderson agreed with Al-Ettifaq to terminate his contract. Upon his departure, Henderson released a statement expressing gratitude to the club, the fans, and everyone involved for the opportunity. He also wished them the best for the remainder of the season.
Initially, Al-Ettifaq was reluctant to let Henderson go as he was their marquee signing. However, they eventually agreed to his departure. On the same day as Henderson’s exit, Gerrard was handed a new two-year contract with the Saudi side.
In a statement, club president Samer Al Misehal thanked Henderson for his efforts but later appeared to take a parting shot regarding his commitment to the club. He emphasized the importance of unity and commitment from all players and staff in order to achieve the team’s goals.
Henderson’s departure from Al-Ettifaq is significant as he is the first major name to leave the Saudi Pro League side. This hasty exit has the potential to be embarrassing for the country, especially after they spent a significant amount of money last summer to recruit big names.
Saudi Pro League vice-chairman Saad Allazeez expressed that sometimes things don’t work out despite best efforts and that no one is to blame. He also mentioned that they expect more good players to come in while acknowledging that some will move on as well.
Overall, Al-Ettifaq remains positive about the progress and growth they have achieved in just half a season. They believe that firm foundations have been laid for future strength.
