Ajax’s €50m Timber Transfer Fee Draws Interest from Man Utd, Liverpool

Date:

Ajax are set to demand a fee of around €50million (£44m) for defender Jurrien Timber this summer, with both Manchester United and Liverpool interested in signing the 21-year-old. Last year, Erik ten Hag, who had recently been appointed as United’s manager, had sought to raid his former club for Timber, but the Dutch international opted to remain in his homeland for another season due to concerns he would not have a starting role at Old Trafford. United instead signed his defensive partner Lisandro Martinez, who has been a success since his arrival. With Harry Maguire possibly on the move, and Eric Bailly, Phil Jones and Azel Tuanzebe all set to leave, another centre-back could be brought in. United’s interest in Timber remains, while Liverpool are also keen on his services, with his partner recently spotted house hunting in the Merseyside area.

Timber has recently revealed that Ajax have agreed to let him leave for the right price this summer, saying: ‘A transfer is getting closer and closer, so to speak. There is a lot of concrete interest and I have made agreements with Ajax. Last year Ajax asked me to stay for at least one more season and to extend my contract. As a club boy I did that with love and after the season we will review the situation. I want to take that step someday. But when that is, you will eventually hear and it will happen in consultation with Ajax. I’m still here anyway and I’m in no hurry. The focus is now on the cup final and the remainder of the competition.’
