Agent Virgil van Dijk? What Liverpool star said that may have changed Cody Gakpo’s mind as Reds beat Manchester United in transfer battle

Virgil van Dijk has been highly influential on the pitch for Liverpool ever since his move in 2017.

He may well now have played a big role off it too, with the Reds closing in on his fellow Dutchman Cody Gakpo.

Gakpo has been a long standing target for Manchester United, but his current club PSV Eindhoven announced he will sign for Liverpool.

It has been a shock development, but previous comments from Van Dijk suggest this may not actually be the case.

During the World Cup, he spoke on Gakpo’s links with United, taking a dig at one of Liverpool’s biggest rivals: “Are Manchester United and Real Madrid the same level at this moment? No disrespect, not at all,” he said as he tried to explain the difference between United and Europe’s biggest clubs.

“I think he definitely has a next step in him. I definitely feel like it could happen.

“Whether it happens in the winter or next year, time will tell. But he’s a great boy. [He] works hard, is very talented and there’s definitely more in him. We are very pleased he’s doing so well and long may it continue.”

Journalist Fabrizio Romano has since revealed the PSV winger spoke to Van Dijk when Liverpool’s bid was submitted.

Gakpo had previously flirted with United amid the speculation: “I thought about Manchester United, but when that didn’t happen, I couldn’t remember. And I started to doubt.

“Leeds United did come. Should I go there? Now I wait everything. I haven’t heard from Manchester United yet. When they come, I’ll think about it. I also seek the help of God in these decisions.”

However, he also hinted at a potential move to the Reds when asked if there were other teams he’d love to play for: “Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool.

“It would be an honour to play there, but I also have to see what kind of team I can best achieve my goals.”

The Reds have previously beaten United to the likes of Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz, with Gakpo set to be the next stolen target.

Jurgen Klopp’s side could certainly have a gem on their hands, especially with the relationship he already has with Van Dijk.
