Adrian, the Spanish goalkeeper, has a unique perspective on Jurgen Klopp’s time at Liverpool because he has played both for and against the team. He first faced Klopp’s Liverpool in January 2016 when West Ham won 2-0 at Upton Park. However, it was at Anfield in the following two seasons that Adrian witnessed the emergence of Klopp’s new team, with Liverpool winning 4-0 and 4-1 against West Ham.
Adrian describes playing against Liverpool at Anfield as “painful” due to the relentless attacking style of play and the intimidating atmosphere created by the fans. He experienced this firsthand in his last game against Liverpool when he saw Mo Salah, Sadio Mane, and Roberto Firmino all score. Little did he know that a couple of seasons later, he would be playing for Liverpool and enjoying the other side of the experience.
Adrian joined Liverpool as a replacement for Simon Mignolet in the summer of 2019. His debut came sooner than expected when Alisson Becker got injured in the opening game against Norwich. Adrian fondly remembers the warm welcome he received from the fans at Anfield during his debut match. He also played a crucial role in securing Liverpool’s victory in the UEFA Super Cup by saving Tammy Abraham’s penalty in the shootout.
Adrian’s early success with Liverpool continued as they went on to win the FIFA Club World Cup in December 2019, followed by the Premier League title. He recalls the celebrations after winning the Club World Cup and emphasizes the importance of quickly refocusing on the Premier League, as they had a game against Leicester just five days later. The match against Leicester showcased Liverpool’s mentality and determination to win all competitions.
The 44-game unbeaten run that set a new club record further solidified Liverpool’s confidence in winning the title even before the pandemic-induced break. Although they had to celebrate their Premier League victory without fans in an empty Anfield, Adrian describes the experience as a great feeling and acknowledges the support of Liverpool fans at home.
In just under a year, Adrian went from having no medals to winning the Super Cup, Club World Cup, and Premier League. He later added the League Cup and FA Cup to his collection, celebrating with the fans during a parade that attracted an estimated 750,000 people in Liverpool.
Adrian’s genuine warmth and gratitude towards the fans and the club are evident throughout the interview. It is clear why Klopp has kept him at Liverpool for the past five years, as he is described as one of the most warmhearted and genuine footballers. Adrian cherishes the special moments and memories he has created with the team and the fans, emphasizing the importance of celebrating and sharing these moments with the supporters.
