Adidas deny holding talks with Manchester United over Mason Greenwood’s future
Adidas have denied holding any discussions with Manchester United regarding the future of Mason Greenwood. The striker has not played for United since January 2022 after being charged with rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour and assault. Those charges were dropped in February but the striker has remained under suspension by United who have been conducting their own investigation into his conduct.
A report from The Sun on Friday claimed United have held talks with Adidas to discuss the possibility of bringing Greenwood back. Those talks were described as ‘positive’ by the newspaper. However, Adidas have denied any such talks took place.
An Adidas spokesperson said: ‘After inaccurate and speculative reporting within the media it’s important for us to clarify that Adidas has had no discussions with Manchester United regarding any member of their playing squad. We play no role in any decisions made regarding any member of the team or staff at the club.’
Greenwood’s Future Remains Uncertain
Greenwood has not played for Manchester United since 22 January 2022 when he started in a 1-0 win over West Ham in the Premier League. Speaking last week, United boss ten Hag revealed he has ‘shared his opinion’ with the club over Greenwood’s future. ‘It’s a club decision and of course, I shared my opinions but it’s a club decision and we all have to accept that.’
Pushed if he wanted Greenwood to return to the United squad, Ten Hag added: ‘I can’t say so much about it but I shared my opinion about it, so let’s see what’s going to happen.’
A number of Italian clubs have expressed interest in signing the striker on loan with club legend Wayne Rooney urging him to leave Old Trafford to rebuild his career.
‘For Mason, it’s a bad position to be in because I’m sure he just wants to play football. But for the club, its image and ensuring they make the right decisions, it’s almost a catch 22,’ Rooney said.
‘I think the best thing for Mason now is to get out of the club and go and develop somewhere else. He needs to get back playing because it has been a long time.
‘With everything that has happened and how long the internal investigation has taken, it’s probably got to a place now where Mason just needs to go and play and to try and get his career back on track.
‘It’s a difficult position for Mason but for the club as well. You have to make sure you get to the right decision before moving forward and it looks like they’re really struggling to get to that place.’
