Joel Embiid Out with Ankle Injury for Sixers’ Christmas Game Against Heat
MIAMI — The NBA’s highly anticipated Christmas matchups took a hit as the Philadelphia 76ers announced that star center and reigning MVP Joel Embiid will be sidelined for Monday’s game against the Miami Heat due to an ankle injury.
Ankle Injury Sidelines Embiid
Embiid, who has been on an impressive streak of scoring at least 30 points and grabbing at least 10 rebounds in 13 consecutive games, suffered a right ankle sprain during the first quarter of Friday’s victory over the Toronto Raptors.
The injury occurred with 5:25 left in the period, but Embiid toughed it out and returned to the game, finishing with 31 points and 10 rebounds. However, the injury worsened after the game, leading to his absence from the team’s trip to Miami.
Butler’s Status Questionable
On the other side, the Miami Heat’s key player, Jimmy Butler, is listed as questionable for the game due to a calf strain that has kept him out of the last two games.
Impressive Performances and Standings
The Philadelphia 76ers currently hold a record of 20-8, with Embiid showcasing MVP-level performances. He is just three games away from matching Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s record of 16 consecutive games with at least 30 points and 10 rebounds set 51 years ago. Embiid has also scored at least 30 points in 14 consecutive games. Despite trading James Harden to the Clippers, the Sixers remain in third place in the Eastern Conference.
The Miami Heat, with a record of 17-12, sit in fifth place in the East. Butler has been averaging 21.5 points per game in the 21 games he has played this season. The team has also received a boost from Tyler Herro’s return, as he has been averaging 28 points in the three games since recovering from an ankle sprain that kept him out for over a month.
