The San Francisco 49ers have decided to rest quarterback Brock Purdy in their upcoming game against the Los Angeles Rams, as coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed. With the No. 1 NFC playoff spot already secured, the 49ers are taking precautions to protect Purdy from potential injury. Instead, Sam Darnold will take the starting position for this game.
Similarly, the Rams, who have already clinched a wild-card berth, will also be sitting their starting quarterback Matthew Stafford. Veteran Carson Wentz will take his place for the game.
Shanahan stated, “Brock’s the only guy for sure I don’t plan on playing.” The 49ers are focused on finding a balance between keeping Purdy safe and continuing to improve as a team. As part of their strategy, Purdy will split reps with Darnold during Wednesday’s practice, with Darnold taking the majority of reps on Thursday.
In addition to Purdy’s absence, star running back Christian McCaffrey will also be sidelined due to a calf injury.
Purdy has been an impressive player this season, with a QBR of 72.7, making him a strong contender for the NFL MVP title. He has thrown for 4,280 yards and 31 touchdowns, ranking second among all quarterbacks.
On the other hand, Darnold is in his sixth season in the NFL, having previously played for the New York Jets and the Carolina Panthers. In 2023, he has appeared in nine games but has yet to start. So far, he has thrown for 108 yards with one touchdown and one interception.
In conclusion, both the 49ers and the Rams are making strategic decisions regarding their starting quarterbacks for their upcoming game. While Purdy and Stafford will be resting, Darnold and Wentz will have the opportunity to showcase their skills on the field.
