Liam Loftus of BBC Sport embarked on a journey across Europe to explore the fan culture of four of the continent’s most renowned football cities. His first destination was Amsterdam, where he encountered Chris and Michelle, two devoted supporters of Ajax. The two fans provided Liam with a comprehensive introduction to the team, from the traditional food and songs to the iconic players who have become cult heroes. Chris and Michelle explained how the club’s history and culture has been passed down through generations, and how the team has become a source of pride for the city. They also shared stories of their own experiences as fans, and how they have been able to form a strong bond with other supporters.
Liam was also given an insight into the unique atmosphere of the Amsterdam ArenA, the home of Ajax. He witnessed first-hand the passion of the fans, and how they create an electric atmosphere that is unmatched by any other stadium in Europe. He also learnt about the club’s famous ‘Total Football’ philosophy, which has been adopted by many teams across the world.
The trip to Amsterdam gave Liam a greater understanding of what it means to be an Ajax fan, and how the team has become an integral part of the city’s identity. He was able to gain a deeper appreciation for the club’s history, culture and traditions, and how they have been embraced by the fans.
