Michigan Favored in National Title Game Despite Michael Penix Jr.’s Stellar Performance
Michael Penix Jr. put on a remarkable display in the semifinal win against Texas, but despite his impressive performance, Michigan is still favored in the upcoming national title game. The Wolverines have opened as 4.5-point favorites. The highly anticipated game is scheduled to kick off at 7:30 p.m. ET on Monday at NRG Stadium in Houston.
Michigan’s Comeback Victory Against Alabama
In the first semifinal, Michigan found themselves trailing by seven points late in the fourth quarter against Alabama. However, they managed to orchestrate a game-tying drive and eventually secured a thrilling 27-20 overtime victory in the Rose Bowl. Despite some struggles on special teams and a lackluster offensive performance in the second half, Michigan has consistently been favored by sportsbooks throughout the season. They were even favored by 2.5 points against Alabama.

Washington’s Underdog Status
In contrast, Washington has been considered the underdog in three of their last four games. They were a 1-point underdog against Oregon State, faced a massive 9.5-point underdog status against Oregon in the Pac-12 title game, and were given 4.5 points against Texas in the Sugar Bowl.
Penix Jr. Presents a Unique Challenge for Michigan’s Defense
Michael Penix Jr. poses a different kind of challenge for the Michigan defense compared to Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe. Milroe is known for his running abilities and his highest passing yardage in a game this season was 321. On the other hand, Penix Jr. averages even higher passing yardage and currently leads the nation in that category. In the semifinal against Texas, Penix Jr. showcased his skills with an impressive 430 yards and two touchdowns on 29-for-38 passing in a 37-31 victory.
The Battle Between Michigan’s Defense and Washington’s Offense
Michigan boasts the best-scoring defense in the country, while Washington possesses one of the highest-scoring offenses. The key question is whether the Wolverines will be able to disrupt Penix Jr., Rome Odunze, and the Washington passing attack.
Over/Under Line and Undefeated Records
The over/under line for the game is set at 54.5 points, which is the second-lowest number for a Washington game this season. In comparison, Michigan games have typically had higher totals. Only three of their games went over 54.5 points this season, while nine of Washington’s games did. Both teams enter the national title game with undefeated records, making them the only two unbeaten teams remaining after Florida State and Liberty suffered losses in their respective bowl games.
A History of Michigan Dominance
Michigan holds the advantage in the all-time series against Washington with a record of 8-5. They also secured a convincing 31-10 victory over Washington in 2021 in Ann Arbor. Additionally, these two teams are set to face each other again in a Big Ten regular season game next year.
A First-Time National Title Game Appearance
Both Michigan and Washington are making their first-ever appearances in the national title game, dating back to the BCS era.
