2024 Basketball Hall of Fame Class Revealed
A new class of basketball legends is headed to Springfield, Mass. The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced its latest class Saturday, featuring 13 new members. Let’s take a closer look at the incredible individuals who will be enshrined in the Hall of Fame this year.
Headliners and Superstars
Vince Carter, Chauncey Billups, and Seimone Augustus are the headliners of this year’s class. Carter, known for his incredible dunking abilities, made eight All-Star Games during his 22-year career and will be remembered as one of the best dunkers in NBA history. His most iconic moment came at the 2000 Olympics when he jumped over Frederic Weis for a jaw-dropping dunk. Carter helped lead the United States to a gold medal in that tournament.
Billups, also known as “Mr. Big Shot,” earned his nickname for his play and leadership with the Detroit Pistons. He led the team to the 2004 NBA championship, where he won NBA Finals MVP. Billups felt validated when he received the call about his induction into the Hall of Fame.
Augustus had an impressive career both in college and the WNBA. She won numerous awards during her time at LSU and was the number one pick in the 2006 WNBA Draft. Augustus went on to win four WNBA titles with the Minnesota Lynx and secured three Olympic gold medals.
Contributors and Coaches
The Hall of Fame is not only for players but also recognizes influential contributors and coaches. Michael Cooper, Walter Davis, Bo Ryan, Charles Smith, Dick Barnett, Harley Redin, Michele Timms, Jerry West, Doug Collins, and Herb Simon are among those being honored this year.
Cooper was a key member of the Showtime Lakers, winning five NBA titles and earning the Defensive Player of the Year award in 1986-87. Davis, a six-time All-Star, holds the record for the leading scorer in Phoenix Suns history. Redin, a longtime women’s basketball head coach at Wayland Baptist University, won six AAU national titles.
Barnett, a former Knicks guard, won three consecutive national titles in college and was a vital member of the Knicks’ championship-winning teams in 1970 and 1973. Timms, a former WNBA All-Star, had her number retired by the Phoenix Mercury and was an integral part of the Australian National Team.
Ryan, Smith, West, Collins, and Simon have all made significant contributions to the sport. Ryan won four Division-III national championships and had a successful coaching career at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Smith became the winningest head coach in Louisiana high school basketball history, winning eight state titles. West, already in the Hall of Fame as a player, is being recognized for his work as an executive, building championship-winning Lakers teams and later serving as an advisor for the LA Clippers. Collins is remembered for his coaching stints with various NBA teams and his time as a television voice for the league. Simon has owned the Indiana Pacers for 41 years, making him the longest-tenured owner in NBA history.
