‘2022 has been the toughest year to date’ – Reece James posts on social media as Graham Potter ‘concerned’ Chelsea star suffered recurrence of knee injury which ruled him out of World Cup

Graham Potter has confirmed Reece James went off injured after ‘feeling something’ in the same knee he injured in October.

The Chelsea right-back finally made his return to football on Tuesday night against Bournemouth, but had to be withdrawn after 53 minutes after going down on the turf with discomfort.

James – who missed the 2022 World Cup after he damaged his knee ligaments – immediately signalled to be taken off, before receiving medical attention and then heading down the tunnel.

But whilst Potter says Chelsea aren’t yet sure about the extent of their star’s injury, he was ‘concerned’ given the discomfort was coming from the same knee.

Speaking after the game, the Chelsea manager said: “It’s the same area, so we are concerned.

“It’s really too soon [to tell]. We’ll have to see over the next 24-48 hours. He felt something there and we will have to find out the extent of it and keep our fingers crossed.”

Prior to being taken off, James was having a blinding performance in his return as the Blues’ two first half goals were enough to secure all three points against the Cherries.

And Potter recognises just how key his defender is, and that’d he planned to ease him back into games gently in order to avoid exactly what went on to happen on Tuesday night.

“He’s been really disappointed to miss the World Cup, of course,” he said.

“It was a huge blow to him. You could see today his quality and what he brings to the team. He is a world-class player. You see it from the outside but not until you work with him do you see how good he is.

“He could play in any team in the world, and any team would miss him. The plan was to play 60 minutes today so now he’s disappointed, of course.

“We hope it’s not as bad as it was and he can have a speedy recovery.”

On Wednesday, James took to social media and spoke to his followers.

He wrote: “2022 has been the toughest year to date. Just wanna thank you all for the support, none of you go unnoticed.

“It’s naturally effected me mentally, I’m currently just tryna deal with the cards I’ve been dealt.

“I hope your end of year is filled with peace, joy & happiness.”

Chelsea’s win over Bournemouth takes them up to 8th in the Premier League, one point off the European football spots.
